Company History - Raison d'EtreThe Orfeo Group was founded in the spring of 2007 by four Boston area artists in order to mount a production of José Rivera's 1993 Obie-award winning play, Marisol. Unlike the genesis of many fledgling theater companies, we found ourselves sharing a need to realize a specific play in addition to aiding and abetting the ever expanding Boston theatre community. Put simply, Marisol follows a small group of young people frustrated and infuriated by their powerlessness against the ridiculous collapse of the world around them and their reliance upon and rejection of the divine. The play resonated deeply with the four of us as both artists and individuals, mostly due to its ability to tap into a realm of magical realism at once both completely in sync with and entirely alien to today's world. A word on our name--historically, Orpheus was an artist whose songs and poetry elicited a visceral response from every living thing around him, charming them into collectivity. We dig that image and think that experiencing a live artistic endeavor alongside a bunch of other living, breathing human beings is as good a way as any to both celebrate and honor it. |
