Mission StatementOrfeo Group creates theatrical experiences that foster community and awaken a collective desire to question, reexamine and discover. In short, we seek to thrill. We offer our shows at low or no cost and regularly collaborate/cross pollinate with other artists and organizations by designing extension programming around our productions such as readings of new work, educational workshops and lectures. A Word On Our NameMythologically speaking, Orpheus's songs and poetry elicited a visceral response from every thing around him. He descended into the underworld, armed only with his art, in pursuit of love. We marvel at this image and think that creating shared experiences with a bunch of other living, breathing human beings is a good way to both celebrate and honor it. Vision and GoalsExisting in a world oversaturated with reality television in conjunction with hundreds of stations and networks from which to choose, we are compelled to emphasize the importance of exposing people in their 20's to a live art form that requires active (as opposed to passive) participation from its audience. The Orfeo Group hopes to invigorate the local scene by producing plays and bringing artistic endeavors to fruition. It is our hope that these productions elicit a strong and varied response from the audience and address subjects that pose a challenge to our social norms and stigmas. We hope to foster a desire to question, reexamine and discover, while working to overwhelm any tendency towards cultural apathy. Additionally, we aim to facilitate an ongoing series of free or affordable workshops, led by experts in their respective fields, for members of the professional Boston theatre community. Few opportunities to obtain quality ongoing training exist in Boston and it is vitally important for the theatre community to grow in order to enhance its reputation as one of the four top theatre cities in the country. Workshops for the professional community will serve to reinvigorate a sense of exploration and purpose for the artist?especially in light of the standard (and arguably stifling) three-week rehearsal process. Finally, it is our long-term goal to establish a program of residencies in local Boston schools. Exposure to theatre and learning how to tell stories at a young age is critically important to encourage both future performers AND future audiences. The Orfeo Group believes that fostering the artistic development of that age group in particular is essential to perpetuating and advancing the art of theatre for generations to come. |
